I think I am one of those people who are easily astonished. For the most part, I’m a glass half full, see the world through rose colored glasses type of person, so it doesn’t take much to get me jumping up and down. My husband has an amazingly creative mind, which he often uses to create special moments that keep us both excited and wanting more. He astonishes me regularly with little things, small gestures, and every once in a while he will pull off something grand that leaves my jaw on the floor.
Our wedding was an astonishing affair. We had the whole thing planned out, a traditional wedding with way too many guests, a catered dinner and lots and lots of booze. We were about to shell out a whole bunch of money for a day that neither one of us really cared about. I asked him one more time if this was what he really wanted, to get married in front of all these people or if he’d rather take that money and put it towards a dream vacation, one that we would remember forever. His answer surprised me. Let’s forget all this and go!
So, we planned a quiet courthouse wedding and a two part vacation, one American city and one tropical location. But he surprised me once again when, out of the blue, he suggested we get married at a doughnut shop on the West Coast. He thought I would say no, that I’d think he was crazy, but I was so excited and impressed by his idea and eagerly agreed.
On the day of our wedding, we both dressed in our fancy clothes and nervously waited to meet our mystery officiant with no idea what to expect. Our officiant, one of the owners of the shop, went through what the ceremony would entail and then he asked us a strange question. Is it okay if I wear a painted suit? We looked at each other, confused, shrugged our shoulders and said sure! Why would we care what kind of suit you wear? A few moments later, he came out to perform our ceremony in a full PANDA SUIT! But, it was on backwards so his little panda tail was where his little panda wiener would be. We were astonished, both our mouths opened in pure joy and amazement and mine apparently stayed open. He had to tell me to close my mouth five minutes into the ceremony so I wouldn’t look like a large mouth bass in all the photos. The whole ceremony was one surprise after another, right up to when he read his vows to me.
We wrote our own vows, secretly hidden away until the wedding day. I read mine first, but when he started to speak, my jaw fell open once again and tears stung my eyes. He pieced together Lady Gaga lyrics to write his vows to me, and everything about them was absolutely perfect. They conveyed his own thoughts and feelings through the words of my favorite artist.
Sometimes, it is the little moments in life that will forever stand out in your memory and make something special into something astonishing. On that day, I knew that as long as I was with him, I would live a life full of happy surprises, and I haven’t been wrong yet. He keeps me hanging on, waiting for the next moment that will leave me astonished.
Beautiful moments, and YAY for doing this your way 🙂

I love everything about this! Including the backwards panda suit, lol
Thanks! We thought it was pretty hilarious. He also noted that our our official witness was a velvet painting of Isaac Hayes.?
Love it!
Thank you!?
Was the suit in backwards intentionally? Very cool wedding!!
I don’t know!? I would think so since there were other people there to help him zip it up.
Wow! How wonderful. I love the idea of being married by someone wearing a panda suit!
Thank you! We certainly weren’t expecting it, but it was one of our fondest memories of that day and it’s a great story to tell!?
